Relationship with Tangata Whenua
Treaty of Waitangi

    Balance Whanganui recognises the Treaty of Waitangi and strives to meet its obligations under the Treaty.  Balance Whanganui recognises Maori as Tangata Whenua, and Maori rights of self determination.

    Balance Whanganui recognises its responsibility to contribute towards the status of Maori health and the reduction of health inequalities for Maori in a way that Maori request.

    People who identify as Maori and use Balance Whanganui’s services will have their peer support, educational and advocacy needs met in a way that respects their cultural identity, individual beliefs and values.

    Where possible, Balance Whanganui will employ appropriately qualified Maori staff.

Relationships with Tangata Whenua

    The developing relationship between Balance Whanganui and the Whanganui Regional PHO provides linkages into the Iwi Health organisations and these will be strengthened as the relationship with the WRPHO is developed under capacity building.

    A Trustee on the Board represents Nga Tangata te Ao Marama and contributes to the governance of Balance Whanganui.

    Balance Whanganui has a growing number of Maori members and peer supporters.

    The Wellness Recovery Action Planning program has been translated into Maori and is available on the www.tereowrap.info website. The Manager of Balance Whanganui was project manager of this translation.

    Balance Whanganui is currently planning another Awa Hikoi with Nga Tangata Te Ao Marama.   Planned activities on the canoe trip on the Awa will include different aspects of MH & AOD Recovery/ WRAP learning at each Marae.

    The establishment of facilities for Tangata Whai Ora to express themselves through their art and music in a peer supported environment.

Next Support Group Meetings are Monday 9 -30 am at Room 111, 53A Ridgway St, and 7pm, Thursday at  57 Ridgway St, Wanganui.
